“Try asking Grandpa Raj from the grocer, he always knows where everything belongs”
said Cik Aina.

“Dumpling the Tiger” is akin to a heartfelt love letter to my homeland, Malaysia. Growing up in this tropical country, filled with the warmth of the people and its culture, I’ve always wanted to infuse these special qualities into my favorite things – pictures and books!
I hope this story offers you a delightful escape, where we can wander alongside a wild animal through the familiar landscapes of Malaysia, Singapore, and other ASEAN countries. May the joy of these pages fill your heart!
My Story
(2021)
Hi, I’m Beatrice. I’ve recently moved into a new apartment, so now I have my own balcony and a kitchen full of my favourite cups. I also have a cat called Hansa, which is a shade of yellow.
As a kid, I always really enjoyed dreaming up weird scenarios in my head. I also liked to think about all the things that might have happened, and how things might have turned out differently, if only I had said the ‘right thing’. Then, instead of saying something lame, I might have sounded really cool to my friends.
Adults used to call this daydreaming, but I disagree! That’s because I wasn’t just dreaming, I actually used to sketch out all these scenarios in comic books, which I drew with my good friend – a boy who sat next to me in class when I was nine. We drew all sorts of adventures based on our own misadventures. Honestly, this was just about the only thing I looked forward to at school!
Of course, the adults said we were distracted. Once again, I beg to differ! I was completely focused on my task… It’s just not the task that they thought I should be focusing on.
Even though I’m now in my 20s, I still really love being a kid. The audacity to combine both stupid bravery and endless curiosity, really makes the ambiguity of what the future holds so much more exciting. The thought that I might be able to change my current circumstances, or even the world, fills my stomach with butterflies! Creating as an adult- it takes me right back to that place.
2020 and 2021 turned out to be difficult years of distance and isolation for most of us. So, I sat down to write and to draw. This book was born out of a journey which I longed to take – both literally (as an adventure in the company of Dumpling!), and also metaphorical- ly as I embarked on the act creating my first book.
Thank you for giving me the chance to reach out to you with this story, and to keep my dream alive. It seemed out of reach at first, but now it lies in your hands. Happy reading!
With Love, Bea
